The PS general secretary today admitted defeat in the legislative elections, saying that he had already congratulated the PSD leader, Luís Montenegro, on his victory, and indicated that the party will now “lead the opposition”.

“Despite the tangential difference between us and the AD (Democratic Alliance), and without disrespecting the votes and voters in the electoral districts of our communities, everything indicates that the result will not allow the PS to be the party with the most votes. I therefore want to congratulate and congratulate AD on its victory in these elections”, declared Pedro Nuno Santos in a hotel in Lisbon where the socialists were following the results of the legislative elections.

The PS leader said that he had already had the opportunity “to personally congratulate the AD leader”, also taking the opportunity to publicly congratulate the coalition as a whole for having come “in first place in this electoral act”.

“The PS will be the opposition, we will lead the opposition. We will be opposition, we will renew the party and we will seek to recover the Portuguese dissatisfied with the PS. That is our task from now on,” she stressed.

Pedro Nuno Santos also added that the socialists make a minority AD government viable, not voting on any motion to reject this executive, but stressed that he will lead the opposition and will not support it in parliament.

This socialist line was conveyed by Pedro Nuno Santos in response to questions from journalists, after assuming the victory of the AD (Democratic Alliance) in the legislative elections.

As he had already done in the pre-campaign, the socialist leader reiterated that the PS will not vote on any rejection motion that is presented at the beginning of the new legislature to a minority government from the AD, because it is unable to present an alternative executive.

But, in relation to the possibility of making the State Budget for 2025 viable for the AD, he considered this scenario “practically impossible”, saying that his party “is strong and united”.

“It’s not worth creating pressure on the PS. We will lead the opposition. We are not the ones who are going to support an AD Government”, he stressed. In response to this question, he received applause when he declared: “The PS did not win the elections, it will not leave the leadership of the opposition to Chega or André Ventura”.

Before the PS leader began to speak, the PS activists who were in the room began to shout “April 25 always, fascism never again”.
