Portimão Chamber receives seal of merit from the Caring for Caregivers Movement

Portimão was one of the 59 municipalities distinguished

Portimão City Council received the seal of merit from the Caring for Caregivers Movement and was one of the 59 municipalities across the country distinguished in the third edition of RACCI – Network of Local Authorities that Care for Informal Caregivers, «which aims to recognize the municipalities and parishes of the national territory with the best practices and support measures for the benefit of informal caregivers", according to the municipality.

Since January 2023, «the Municipality has provided support, guidance and information on the requirements and formalities for obtaining the Statute, within the scope of social assistance and monitoring that seeks to meet the socioeconomic needs of residents and promote their integration and social dignity».

«The Municipality's existing response to people who are informal caregivers has two aspects: assistance to families provided by techniques dedicated to this mission, with the purpose of guiding and informing about the requirements and formalities for obtaining the Statute; assistance to families to overcome any needs of the household, namely, if they meet the necessary requirements for the granting of support existing in the municipality, rental support subsidy, municipal contribution to medicines, social water tariff, food support and pecuniary support from exceptional character", revealed the Portimão Chamber.

In conjunction with the District Solidarity and Social Security Center of Faro, «the process is streamlined and implemented and, on the other hand, coordination is made with the Health Center, in order to provide a place in the National Integrated Continuous Care Network (RNCCI), for the caregiver to rest».

Since the beginning, «32 people have used social assistance and support, requesting support for the status of informal caregivers».

Those interested in benefiting from this response must, in advance, schedule an appointment with the Housing, Social Development and Health Division of Portimão City Council to present their cases, as all information will only be provided in person at the office located on Rua Pé da Cruz, nº9, open from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 am and 13:00 pm, and from 14:00 pm to 16:00 pm.

An informal caregiver is someone who “takes care, on a regular or permanent basis, of other people who are in a situation of dependence. You can be a main informal caregiver if you permanently accompany the person being cared for, live in the same house and do not receive remuneration for work, or for the type of care you provide. In this case, you may be entitled to the main informal caregiver support allowance».

“He will be a non-main informal caregiver, if he regularly, but not permanently, accompanies the person being cared for, and may receive remuneration for work, or be paid for the care he provides”, concluded the Chamber.

One of the missions of the Caring for Informal Caregivers Movement is to recognize municipalities and parishes across the country with the best practices and measures for the benefit of informal caregivers, making their contribution visible in the most diverse areas and diseases in which they play a fundamental role.
