Assis and Aguiar-Branco advance to the second round in the election for president of parliament

No decision yet

Francisco Assis got 90 votes today in the election for president of the Assembly of the Republic, while Aguiar-Branco obtained 88, both going through to the second round, which will take place immediately.

None of the candidates obtained the necessary absolute majority to be elected president of parliament in the first round.

The candidate presented by Chega, deputy Manuela Tender, had 49 votes in favor (one less than her entire bench) and is left out in this vote.

In this vote, in which 229 deputies participated, there were also two blank votes.

According to the Rules of Procedure, “the candidate who obtains the absolute majority of votes from the deputies in office is elected President of the Assembly of the Republic”, that is, 116.

“If none of the candidates obtains this number of votes, a second ballot will immediately take place, in which only the two candidates with the most votes who have not withdrawn their candidacy will compete. If no candidate is elected, the process is reopened”, states the same document.
