Road accidents, deaths and serious injuries have decreased this year

The Public Security Police announced today

Road accidents and resulting fatalities and serious injuries decreased in the first two months of the year, compared to the same period in 2019 and 2023, the Public Security Police (PSP) announced today.

«The data on road accidents for the months of January and February 2024, and their comparison with the same period in 2019 and 2023, reveal that this year there was a significant decrease in the number of accidents, fatalities and serious injuries », informed the PSP in a statement, noting that the years 2021 and 2022 are not considered in terms of comparison, because they correspond to the pandemic period, in which there was less road traffic.

The number of minor injuries and the total number of injuries increased (91 more and 69 more, respectively) compared to last year, but the number of accidents decreased (520 fewer, from 8.897 to 8.377), as well as their severity, now that the number of fatalities “is clearly lower” than last year (from 17 to 10), as well as the number of serious injuries (from 122 to 100).

Compared to the first two months of 2019, there is a decrease in the number of accidents (1.228 fewer), as well as the number of fatalities (1 less), minor injuries (345 fewer) and the total number of injuries (340 fewer ).

Only the number of serious injuries was higher (five more) this year compared to that recorded in 2019.

Regarding road inspection in the months of January and February 2024, the PSP carried out 3.990 operations across the country, inspected 106.614 drivers and controlled 481.871 vehicles by radar.

In total, the police recorded 27.777 infractions, of which 5.894 were for speeding, which corresponds to more than 21% of the total offenses recorded.

As part of the same inspections, 34.558 alcohol tests were carried out, resulting in 477 administrative offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The PSP highlights that, of these infractions, 113 concerned “drivers to whom the reduced alcohol rate applies” (drivers with a driving license for less than 3 years), corresponding to around 24% of the total infractions for driving under the effect of alcohol.

Other infractions highlighted by the security forces were the lack of mandatory periodic inspection (2.344 cases), lack of civil liability insurance (773), use of a cell phone while driving (601), failure to use a seat belt (305) and of baby seats (125).

In the same period, 1.040 arrests were made for road crimes, namely 555 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 485 without a legal license.

The PSP called for safe driving and compliance with the law, remembering that, currently, human behavior «is recognized as the most relevant condition for the occurrence of the majority of road accidents».
