ABC organizes solidarity march

Route is 6 kilometers

The Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC-RI), a research center at the University of Algarve (UAlg), organizes, on the 17th of March, a solidarity march for movement diseases – the “March for Ataxias”.

The event, organized by the research group of Clévio Nóbrega, leader of the Molecular Neuroscience and Gene Therapy laboratory, is open to the entire community and covers a 6-kilometer route, starting at the Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve at 9:30 am.

This solidarity initiative aims to raise awareness of rare, incurable and neurodegenerative diseases that affect movement, namely SCA2 and SCA3 or Machado-Joseph Disease. One of the symptoms that these diseases have in common is ataxia. This symptom refers to the lack of coordination of movement in different parts of the body, which leads to consequences such as lack of balance, difficulty in picking up objects, swallowing and speaking, among others.

The funds raised with the “March for Ataxias” will be used in full to support two non-profit associations: the Portuguese Association of Hereditary Ataxias (APAHE) and the Associação Atlântica de Apoio aos Doentes de Machado Joseph.

Registration for this walk costs 5 euros for children (from 5 years old to 18 years old) and students (including higher education students) and 10 euros for the rest of the community and will be open until March 8th, being mandatory.

Each participant will be covered by personal accident and civil liability insurance and will be entitled to a walk participant kit that will include a t-shirt related to the event.
