museum of Faro welcomed the largest number of visitors in recent years in 2023

There were 38 people visiting the Museum

The Municipal Museum of Faro (MMF) had, in 2023, the highest number of visitors in recent years, the municipality announced this Thursday, February 29th.

There were 38, a number that exceeds the previous maximum, reached in 223 (which was 2019). Most of those who want to visit the MMF are foreign tourists, but the numbers, compared to 36, increase, both in relation to nationals and those coming from other countries.

«Some of the exhibitions contributed to achieving these results, such as the one that allowed us to see some of the emblematic works of Manuel Baptista, Joaquim António Viegas, as well as the Artadentro cycle, the rooms of ancient painting and national treasures, which can be visited in this space», says the municipality.

«It is also important to highlight that the MMF is not limited to organizing exhibitions, but develops a constant activity, such as guided visits, as well as community intervention and the carrying out of conservation and restoration works, themes that give a important dynamic to this space, where a diverse and recognized technical team works”, continues the Municipality.

Furthermore, the School Program should be highlighted, which also involved, in 2023, 900 more participants than in 2019, and where an archeology, museography, inventory and research, secretariat and surveillance service operates there.

«The museum continues to have many visitors, a sign that cultural tourism can be successful in the city», comments Marco António Lopes, director of this space and head of the Division of Museums, Archeology and Cultural Heritage, regarding these numbers, highlighting that «new challenges are expected this year, with more exhibitions, educational services, restoration and events that we are preparing and which will certainly be appealing to our audience».

At the moment, the MMF is closed due to works being carried out since the beginning of February.

According to the municipality of Faro, «the work, which is continuing at a good pace, will allow this space to gain new features, becoming more convenient, comfortable and accessible to everyone and, therefore, boosting the increase and interest of visitors».

During the museum's closure period (which is expected to last three months), activities, adapted to points other than the museum's facilities, will continue to take place, namely at the Regional Museum, Galeria Trem and Ermida de Santo António do Alto, which will operate at normal times.
