Loulé plants 197 trees to avoid an “urban heat island” around the Municipal Stadium

Planted trees and vegetation will «provide shade», «create atmospheric humidity», and also function as «CO2 sinks»

197 trees and shrubs were planted around the Loulé Municipal Stadium, to «increase the microclimatic, visual and acoustic comfort of the entire space».

This plantation, which favored «indigenous species and/or adapted to local soil and climate conditions, namely carob trees, olive trees and almond trees, among others», is the implementation of the project to adapt this space to the «urban heat island effects», within the scope of application to REACT-EU/2021 of the Compete 2020 Program.

To end an «urban heat island», the planted trees and vegetation will «provide shade», «create atmospheric humidity», and also function as «CO2 sinks». All of this, highlights the Municipality of Loulé, responsible for the project, will make «the space more pleasant from a visual point of view and enjoyment due to color and stability in terms of thermal comfort», with «biodiversity also being valued».

The intervention, carried out in an area of approximately 3500 square meters, also included the improvement and installation of automatic irrigation systems, limited to the minimum indispensable area, as well as “the implementation of solutions for using rainwater and using other water sources other than the public supply network, promoting more efficient and sustainable water management».

When the trees grow, highlights the Municipality of Loulé, the population will be able to «enjoy a more pleasant space in the heart of the urban center, as the lack of shading and green area around the Loulé Municipal Stadium did not offer conditions for the city's inhabitants (namely the parishes of S. Clemente and S. Sebastião), but also visitors and athletes, could enjoy the space, especially at times of high temperatures».

This project was funded as part of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, under the COMPETE 2020- REACT-EU Program.
