Karlota forces IPMA to place mainland Portugal under yellow warning

At the origin of the change in the weather is the Karlota depression

All districts of mainland Portugal will be under yellow warning on Thursday due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

In the coming days, in addition to rain, strong winds and sea disturbances are also expected in mainland Portugal and Madeira.
The yellow rain warning for the 18 districts will be in force between 15pm and 00pm on Thursday.

The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are once again under yellow warning between 09:00 and 15:00 on Friday due to of the rain.

The IPMA also issued an orange warning for Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga between 12:00 and 18:00 on Thursday due to maritime unrest, which then changed to yellow, with the latter lasting until 06:00 collapsed.

Also the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro and Coimbra will be under yellow warning due to the state of the sea until 06:00 on Saturday.

The Institute also issued a yellow warning for Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga due to the forecast of south/southwest winds with gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour (km/h) in the highlands.

The IPMA also placed the Madeira archipelago under yellow warning due to southwest winds with gusts of up to 80 km/h, 100 km/h in the highlands, between 09 am and 00 pm on Thursday.

The south coast and mountainous regions of Madeira will also be under yellow warning on Thursday (between 09:00 and 15:99) due to sometimes heavy rain.

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

At the origin of the change in the weather in mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago is the Karlota depression.

According to a statement from IPMA, “this depression is part of a complex depression system, with two nuclei, which is evolving into just one nucleus, which will be located southwest of Ireland”.

The depression has an associated cold frontal surface and it will be this front that will affect mainland Portugal from Thursday onwards.

The change in the weather begins to be felt today with light rain, especially in the North and Center regions, and with the wind intensifying from mid-afternoon.
