122nd birthday of master Manuel Cabanas marked in VRSA

The 122nd anniversary of Master Manuel Cabanas, born in Vila Nova de Cacela, self-taught artist and opponent of the Estado Novo, was highlighted this Saturday, February 17th, in Vila Real de Santo António. 

The tribute to this personality from the municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António and Barreiro began at 10 am, in the municipal cemetery of Cacela Velha, with the placing of a wreath on the grave of the self-taught man, master in the art of wood engraving, opponent of the State. New, convinced republican and founding member of the PS.

At 11:00 am, the solemn session took place in the main hall of the Municipal Chamber of Vila Real de Santo António, where the historian Fernando Pessanha, as representative of the Liga Manuel Cabanas, welcomed those present, followed by the intervention of the mayor of Vila Real de Santo António. realense, Álvaro Araújo, who remembered the «missed son of our municipality (VRSA), heroic anti-fascist resister and defender of democratic values».

The program continued with a musical moment by André Ramos, on classical guitar, and with a conference by Carlos Bicas, friend and disciple of Master Manuel Cabanas.

The program of activities culminated with the traditional lunch, where the Liga Manuel Cabanas expressed the objective of holding another cultural day, in Barreiro, dedicated to the memory of its patron.
