UAlg hosts congress to launch the internationalization of the European University of the Seas

The closing session, scheduled for 18:30 pm, will be chaired by Elvira Fortunato, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education

An international congress, which will mark the beginning of the internationalization strategy of the European University of the Seas, will take place this Friday, January 12th, at the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Grand Auditorium, on the Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve (UAlg).

The objective is to transform this European consortium – the European University of the Seas – «into a global partnership, highlighting its importance for the planet and for a more sustainable future», says UAlg.

To achieve this objective, a Global Gateway Declaration will be signed by representatives of the SEA-EU Alliance universities, as well as their strategic partners, academic and non-academic.

This declaration translates into a joint commitment to face global challenges that contribute to sustainability, such as migration, gender balance and open science, also focusing on climate neutrality, the transition to clean energy, industry , sustainable agriculture and mobility.

Furthermore, as a result of the SEA-EU Congress, external partners will be better prepared to prioritize the protection of biodiversity, especially marine biodiversity, the potential of the sea economy for sustainable food production and the well-being of citizens in coastal areas .

At this event, the conclusions of SEA-EU 1.0 will be presented in detail and plans for SEA-EU-2.0 will be revealed. The results of the Future Leaders Forum, which took place in Naples, in October 2023, will also be highlighted, with a special focus on the perspective of Generation Z.

This initiative with international impact will bring together at UAlg rectors, vice-rectors and the main representatives of the remaining universities in the Alliance and their partner universities, as well as associated external partners, from Europe and various parts of the world.

The closing session, scheduled for 18:30 pm, will be chaired by Elvira Fortunato, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

To celebrate the European University of the Seas, at 20:30 pm, in the Grand Auditorium Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the “Orquestral Concert of the Seas” will be held by Orquestra do Algarve.
