Frontal system associated with Depression Irene brings rain, wind and sea disturbances

From the late afternoon of the 16th, Tuesday

A frontal system associated with depression Irene will bring rain, wind and strong sea disturbances to mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) announced today.

The IPMA explains that, following the established emission criteria, the name IRENE was assigned by Meteo France (French Meteorological Service) to a depression that was centered at 32N 38W at 12UTC on January 14th (Sunday).

Although mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago are not directly affected by the depression, a frontal system associated with it will condition the
weather conditions in these territories.

Thus, from the end of the afternoon on the 16th, Tuesday, on the mainland, precipitation will be persistent, and may at times be heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, until the end of the 17th, especially in the North and Center regions. .

The wind will intensify from the morning of the 16th, blowing at times strongly on the coast, with gusts of up to 75 km/h, and in the highlands, with gusts of up to 85 km/h, and this situation could extend until the end of the 17th.

An increase in sea agitation is also expected on the 17th and 18th, with southwesterly waves measuring 4 to 5 meters along the entire coast.

In this sense, adds IPMA, warnings have already been issued for Precipitation, Maximum Gusts and Maritime Unrest at the Yellow level.

From the 15th onwards, in the Madeira archipelago, there will be periods of rain or showers, which will sometimes be heavy, especially on the southern slopes and highlands of the island of Madeira, on the 16th.

The wind will intensify on the 16th, blowing strong from the southwest, with gusts of up to 85 km/h, being strong to very strong in the highlands, with gusts of up to 100 km/h.

The increase in sea agitation will also be significant, with waves in the western quadrant measuring 4 to 5 meters on the 16th and 17th.

The IPMA adds that «strong wind and sea agitation will affect maritime areas of national responsibility», meaning that caution is advised for anyone traveling at sea.
