Order of Architects mourns the death of José Veloso

José Veloso, died this Friday, the 19th, aged 93

«Architect, fraternal man and great sensitivity», this is how the Order of Architects remembers José Veloso, who died this Friday, day 19, at 93 years old.

José Veloso was born in Lagos and graduated in Architecture from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa.

An anti-fascist activist since he was young, he settled in Lagos, where he opened his studio, having been elected councilor of this city between 1983 and 1985.

Between 1974 and 1976 he worked for the Housing Development Fund, as coordinator of SAAL teams, with projects in several municipalities in the Algarve, remaining forever linked to the Bairro dos Índios da Meia-Praia.

«Politically and professionally very active, he dedicated his expertise almost exclusively to projects of public equipment and municipal and cooperative housing in Alentejo and Algarve, always in defense of architecture as a social value», recall the Order.

He wrote almost two hundred articles in the regional and national press, about politics, his profession and one of his great passions – boating.

In 2021, he was distinguished by the Order of Architects as an Extraordinary Honorary Member.

«Today the great José Veloso left us. His words will remain forever: “Architecture should not be distinguished from the organization of society, what I call the social role of architecture.” To all family and friends, the Algarve Regional Section of the Order of Architects sends its deepest condolences", reads the Order's note published on the Facebook page.
