Tavira Museum organizes visit to the Hermitage of São Sebastião

Visit takes place on Saint Sebastian's Day

The Tavira Museum promotes, on January 20th, starting at 10:30 am, a visit to the Hermitage of São Sebastião.

The initiative is part of the program and will be guided by Ricardo Louro, senior technician for Cultural Heritage at the Municipality.

The Hermitage of São Sebastião is one of the treasures of Tavira's cultural heritage. Although its origins are unknown, it is believed that the temple dates back to the 15th or 16th century. In the 18th century, the hermitage underwent an important reconstruction and artistic renovation that resulted in the building we know today.

The baroque architecture, especially the work of the master stonemason Diogo Tavares e Ataíde, and the paintings dedicated to the life of São Sebastião, by the painter Diogo Mangino, are some of the highlights of this place.

“Tours in the History of Tavira” aim to provide insight into the past of the city and the municipality, the landscape, the monuments and historical characters, as well as raising awareness of the need to protect and enhance the heritage.

Those interested in participating – maximum 30 people – must fill out, by January 18th, the registration form, available here
