Last year was “the best in history” for tourism with 25 billion in revenue

Said today the Secretary of State for Tourism

The Secretary of State for Tourism said today that 2023 was the best tourist year ever in the country, with more than 30 million guests, 77 million overnight stays and revenue of around 25 billion euros.

«It was in fact a very positive year for the country's tourism, and also for Portugal as a whole, a record year in tourism, the best year in the history of tourism in Portugal», said the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Serviços Nuno Fazenda, in a public session of Turismo de Portugal, in Lisbon.

The government official highlighted the records achieved in the various tourism demand indicators in 2023, with more than 30 million guests, a growth of around 10% compared to 2019, which had been the best tourist year, and also 77 million overnight stays and revenue in the order of 25.000 million euros, a growth of 37% compared to 2019 and 18,5% compared to 2022.

Nuno Fazenda also highlighted the growth in all regions of the country, throughout the year.

«We are talking about a structural change in our tourism», he highlighted.

The Secretary of State said he believes that tourism will grow “even more in 2024”, pointing to confidence in companies and workers in the sector, as well as in public policies for tourism.
