«There is still a lot» that affects students and it is with this premise in mind that Rita Tavares took office last week, as president of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve (AAUAlg). Housing, transport, proximity and stability are the main flags.

In statements to the Sul Informação and on Rádio Universitária do Algarve (RUA) FM, minutes before taking office, Rita Tavares spoke about some of these priorities.

In terms of housing, in January the Crowdfunding, open to companies, for the construction of a residence, in Portimão, where there will be a new campus.

«We have already approved, in the Magna Assembly, the allocation of 150 thousand euros for the construction of the residence. We propose, in Portimão, due to the fact that we look to the future and see that a new campus will be built », he explained.

In addition, the Academic Association will “work with the rectory and Social Action Services to understand the conditions of university residences”.

«Some works are being carried out, but in others there will be none. We want to see what their needs will be too», guaranteed Rita Tavares.

In relation to public transport, one of the major gaps identified by students, the president of the UAlg Academic Association explained that it is necessary to «continue working with the municipalities».

«Only together can we get anywhere and provide new solutions. We know that there is a Metrobus project and we will monitor it, together with the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, without forgetting to fight with the municipalities, especially due to the issue of timetables», said Rita Tavares.
