Biowaste collection progresses in the municipality of Lagoa

The «Lagoa Valoriza+» project foresees the implementation of the system in two phases

The Municipality of Lagoa is implementing a system of selective collection of bio-waste – food and garden waste – from homes and commercial establishments on the Horeca canal, restaurants, cafes, school canteens and IPSS, in order to meet national and community goals recovery of biodegradable waste and reduction of the large quantities currently sent to landfill.

Biowaste is biodegradable waste from gardens and parks, food and kitchen waste from homes, offices, restaurants, wholesalers, canteens, catering and retail units and similar waste from food processing units.

«Around 40% of the waste we produce in our homes is bio-waste, the majority of which is food waste», highlights Câmara de Lagoa.

«The correct separation at origin allows its valorization and transformation into compost, for organic enrichment of the soil, contributing decisively to the circular economy», he adds.

The «Lagoa Valoriza+ Selective Proximity Collection» project will promote the selective collection of bio-waste, coming from existing homes in the municipality, in specific containers placed on public roads, next to the ecological islands installed in the municipality of Lagoa.

For this purpose, a 10-liter bucket will be distributed free of charge to each residential accommodation in the municipality.

The «Lagoa Valoriza+ Canal Horeca» project will selectively collect bio-waste in hotels, restaurants, canteens, cafes and pastry shops. For this purpose, 120-liter and 240-liter buckets will be distributed to participating establishments.

The «Lagoa Valoriza+» project foresees the implementation of the system in two phases. In the first phase, which focuses on the area of the Union of Parishes of Lagoa and Carvoeiro, which began on November 2, around 273 establishments on the Horeca channel are covered, as well as all canteens and dining rooms in schools and IPSS.

In terms of the general population, in this first phase, more than 4.000 accommodation units will be covered, starting on December 4th.

The second phase, to be implemented over the next year, will extend the collection of organic waste to the parishes of Ferragudo and Porches.

400-liter composters will also be delivered to citizens interested in composting at home.

The investment in this project is around 150 thousand euros, in the acquisition of collection equipment, the purchase of which was subsidized by the Environmental Fund/PRR and, also, around 150 thousand euros per year for the operationalization of the collection of Bio-waste.

A communication campaign is also underway, worth 20 thousand euros, to raise awareness among the population of the importance of valuing this waste and informing about the appropriate ways of doing so, as well as information sessions and practical workshops on composting.

A website was also developed with all the information on this project and is now available at https://biorresiduos.cm-lagoa.pt.
