PAN monitors sanitation works on Armona Island

Work will be interrupted during the summer to avoid constraints during this period

Alexandre Pereira, municipal deputy in Olhão, visited Armona Island this week to closely monitor the sanitation works and remodeling of the drinking water supply network.

«This is, without a doubt, alongside the new Official Animal Collection Center – CROA, one of the most anticipated works in Olhão in recent decades. The expansion of the wastewater drainage network will not only allow these effluents to be sent for adequate treatment, but also the deactivation of more than 800 septic tanks that currently exist and serve the entire island", says the PAN deputy.

«On the other hand, the remodeling of the water supply network will provide a gain from this very important resource, as currently the losses are enormous: half of the drinking water supplied to the island is lost through leaks in the current pipelines», continued the deputy of the PAN.

The work, which began in October this year, is currently in the 1st phase, having started the intervention in the southernmost area of the island, and will continue until June 2024, when it will be interrupted to avoid constraints during the period of Summer.

«With the installation of pipelines and branches and the construction of three new pumping stations, all effluents produced on Armona Island will be sent to the new WWTP Faro/Olhão, where, in turn, they will go through three phases of treatment: preliminary treatment and equalization, secondary treatment, followed by filtration and disinfection, being subsequently discharged into the Ria», explained Alexandre Pereira.

The deputy reinforces that «this particular case is an example that you should never start building a house from the roof».
