GNR records 1 death and 7 serious injuries in 390 accidents in the last 48 hours

According to provisional data from the “Christmas and New Year 2023/2024” operation

One death, seven serious injuries and 15 minor injuries are the result of the 390 accidents recorded on Friday and Saturday by the GNR, according to provisional data from the “Christmas and New Year 2023/2024” operation.

Regarding the accident with a fatal victim, a 76-year-old man, the GNR said, in a statement, that it was a collision between a passenger vehicle and a bicycle occurred at around 17:20 pm on Saturday on Estrada Nacional nº 2, in Castro Verde, in Beja.

According to the GNR, between 00:00 on Friday and 23:59 on Saturday, 16.934 motorists were inspected.

105 drivers were detected as driving with excess alcohol and, of these, 58 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1,2 grams/liter (the legal maximum is 0,5 g/l).

49 people were also arrested for driving without a legal license, the National Republican Guard said in a statement.

Of the 4.231 road traffic offenses detected, the GNR highlights 1.214 for speeding, 47 for excess alcohol, 153 for lack of or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child restraint systems (car seats).

The data also shows that 95 infractions were due to the improper use of a cell phone while driving, 412 were due to the lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 154 were due to the lack of mandatory civil liability insurance.

The GNR ensures that during the operation it will continue to “prioritize the monitoring” of driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances, speeding and improper use of cell phones.

The correct use of seat belts and child seats, the lack of mandatory periodic inspection and mandatory civil liability insurance and the incorrect execution of overtaking, changing direction and giving way maneuvers are other situations in which military personnel they will be attentive in inspection actions.
