64 social solidarity and animal support institutions in the Algarve received surplus food worth more than half a million euros, in the months of July, August and September, as part of the Missão Continente project.

«Donated items are considered surplus when they lose their commercial character, but preserve all the necessary conditions for safe consumption, avoiding food waste in a circular economy logic. They include fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, grocery and bakery items, among other food items», according to Continente.

With this project, the supermarket chain aims to «minimize the waste of any food that is ready to be consumed, speeding up the flow of products and avoiding tons of waste».

«On this 20th anniversary of Missão Continente, we reaffirm our commitment to social responsibility. The donations of 5.8 million meals highlight our active role in supporting the institutions we support throughout the year and that do fundamental work in each community. At the same time as we support local communities, we contribute to the reduction and awareness of food waste», says Nádia Reis, director of communication and social responsibility at Continente.

In the first nine months of the year, Missão Continente distributed 23,1 million euros in food and non-food products to social solidarity and animal support institutions across the country.

In addition to regular donations to institutions, Missão Continente also makes food available to its employees for consumption in the social areas of the project's stores and warehouses.
