Arlindo Homem wins 1st Prize in the “World Heritage in Portugal” Photography Competition

The jury favored the originality of the approach to the theme, the technical quality and the aesthetic value of the photography

The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) was pleased that Arlindo Homem, official photographer of this organization, was the winner of the 1st edition of the “World Heritage in Portugal” Photography Competition.

The Award ceremony took place in the Library of the National Palace of Mafra – the space portrayed in the distinguished image – yesterday morning.

This competition was launched in 2023 by the Portuguese World Heritage Network / UNESCO National Commission with the aim of “valuing, promoting and disseminating Portugal’s world heritage”. Of a total of 698 photographs submitted, 244 were considered eligible.

In its final assessment, the jury favored, in particular, the originality of the approach to the theme, the technical quality and the aesthetic value of the photography.

The jury awarded a Prize and two honorable mentions:
• Winning photograph: Mafra National Palace Library, by Arlindo Homem
• Honorable mention: Golden Douro – Alto Douro Vinhateiro, by João Galamba de Oliveira
• Honorable mention: The staircase – Convent of Christ in Tomar, by António Tedim

Born in the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha, Arlindo Homem has been a member of the DGPC staff since 2018. A professional photographer for two decades, in 2022 he was honored by the City Council of his homeland, which awarded him the Medal of Cultural Merit in recognition of his long and versatile career, materialized in images published in Portugal and abroad.

In 2018, some of his photographs were brought together in the exhibition “Futebol, Fátima, Fado e… Facebook”, curated by João Nuno Reis and which has been touring the country.

Arlindo Homem is also a friend of Sul Informação, to which he has already provided photographs, particularly of the Sagres Fortress or the President of the Republic.
