the airport of Faro will break the record for passengers handled in one year, in 2023, he revealed to Sul Informação André Gomes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

This official believes that, one month before the end of the year, the 9 million passengers who had been transported to and from the airport will have already been exceeded. Faro in 2019 and there is no doubt: «2023 will clearly be a record year in terms of passenger movement at the airport».

This had already been anticipated by Alberto Mota Borges, director of Gago Coutinho Airport, in Faro, at a work meeting promoted by the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve, in mid-November.

On that day, this official revealed that the year 2023 “was one of total recovery”, after a 2022 in which there was already a recovery compared to the previous two years, but below 2019.

Mota Borges, who is also a member of the RTA Executive Committee, revealed that «October was one of the best months of the year», in terms of the volume of passengers transported and provided data indicating that, since the beginning of 2023, the volume of passengers transported monthly was always above 2019, with the exception of January, which was in line.

In such a way that, at the end of October, the 2022 numbers had already been largely exceeded (8,14 million passengers handled, according to Mota Borges) and the figure was already very close to the 2019 total.

In an interview with Sul Informação, André Gomes confirmed that, in November, the 9 million threshold was surpassed and that this will be the best year ever, in terms of passenger traffic, at the Airport of Faro.

This is just one of the indicators of what is being a “good tourist year”.

«We have numbers, in terms of all indicators, better than last year and, in some of them, better than or in line with 2019», revealed the president of Turismo do Algarve.

According to the most recent data from the National Statistics Institute, referring to the first nine months of the year (until September), in terms of guests, the Algarve is 7,2% above 2022 and in line with 2019, with a total of 4,2 million guests in the region.

The occupancy rate rose 4,2% compared to 2022 and 1,2% compared to 2019.

In terms of overnight stays, the number increased by 5,8% compared to 2022, but is 4% below 2019. Until September, 16,9 million overnight stays were recorded in the Algarve.

«By the end of the year, we expect to reach 5 million guests and 20 million overnight stays», revealed André Gomes.

The economic indicators are clearly favorable in 2023.

In income, there was an increase of 11,3% compared to 2022 and 27,9% compared to 2019.

This means that the Algarve is, for the first time, «about to surpass the mark of 1500 million euros per year in terms of tourist accommodation».

André Gomes also spoke of a “fading of seasonality”, which can be seen in the movement at the airport, particularly in October, but also in other numbers.

«In the first five months of this year, we had some months with double-digit growth, in terms of overnight stays and guests, not to mention income», concluded the president of Turismo do Algarve.
