Order of Nurses applauds creation of working group on internship

Order of Nurses recalls that it has been “fighting this battle” for eight years

The Order of Nurses today welcomed the creation of a working group to propose an internship model, remembering that it is not fair for a nurse to pay out of pocket for specialization.

In a statement, the Order of Nurses (OE) recalls that it has been “fighting this battle” for eight years and that it has never stopped demanding “that nurses be treated with respect and equality”.

The creation of this working group was published today in Diário da República, in a diploma that defines that the group has 120 days to propose the creation of «an internship model applicable to the training period in professional practice, in a clinical area of specialization in nursing» .

This model will have the purpose of «certifying skills for the provision of specialized nursing care in one of the legally recognized specialty areas, towards the award of the title of specialist nurse», states the diploma.

In the note released today, the OE recalls that “it is not fair, nor understandable”, for nurses to pay for their specialization out of their pocket, unlike doctors and pharmacists, who have their internship paid for by the State.

«The specialization of nurses is also an investment in the National Health Service», highlights the OE, remembering that several national and international studies conclude that the intervention of specialist nurses reduces the mortality rate, leads to improved clinical results for chronically ill and reduces the number of hospitalizations and readmissions.

According to the report “Specialized Nursing Care as a Response to the Evolution of Health Care Needs”, carried out by the Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESCTEC), a 1% increase in the proportion of specialist nurses could lead to to a reduction in hospital stay by around 6%.

«The first step has been taken. But it is just a step on a path that should have been taken many years ago», considers the Order of Nurses.
