The Contrapeso Festival will return to Loulé to promote theater and jazz shows, «starring established and emerging Portuguese artists», and training activities, between the 30th of November and the 3rd of December.

In total, seven shows and two training sessions are planned, taking place in six spaces in Loulé, namely Cineteatro Louletano, Auditorium of Solar da Música Nova, Casa da Mákina, Tempo das Artes, Palácio Gama Lobo and Conservatório de Música de Loulé.

The program for the 2023 edition of the festival, under the theme “Generations”, features «disciplinary intersections and various mediation actions, such as workshops and masterclasses, covering different audiences and themes, from emigration told through the prism of four clowns, to euthanasia or gypsyphobia, including revisiting unavoidable names in world jazz to creating original music based on poetry», according to Mákina de Cena, which organizes the event.

The Contrapeso Festival kicks off on November 30th with the show “Selvagem”, by Carolina Santos and Marco Martins, who also take on the role of artistic directors of this festival.

The following day, Companhia Nariguda presents the show “Adiante” at the Cineteatro Louletano, «starring clowns who take the spectator on a journey through the dream and poetic narratives that define the symbolism of the stairs».

At night, at Solar da Música Nova, the space dedicated to the festival's musical program, João Barradas, «one of the most renowned and widely recognized European accordionists today», presents a solo jazz accordion concert.

Oficina de Ideias das Terras do Oeste (OITO) presents on December 2nd, “O Infinito Estrangeiro”, and later, double bassist Nelson Cascais performs as a quintet at the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium with a tribute to one of the most important North American musicians of the XNUMXth century, Charles Mingus.

On December 3rd, at 11am, at Casa da Mákina, a childhood performance by Ana Catarina Santos and Sílvio Vieira entitled “Dentro00” is presented, which aims to reflect on the artistic gesture, which is at the same time translator and creator of unspeakable things.

The program of this 3rd edition of the Contrapeso Festival ends with the show “Homo Sacer”, the new creation of the company Bestiário, where the actress and activist Maria Gil, joins Teresa V. Vaz for a reflection on anti-gypsyism, with so much anthropological as political.

In addition to the program of shows, the Contrapeso Festival also plans, from the 25th to the 29th of November, the Clown and Comicidades Workshop, guided by Eva Ribeiro and on the 2nd of December the Jazz Masterclass with Zé Eduardo, an unmissable name for all generations of jazz national.
