The unexpected midwives were deputy chief Ângelo Marques and 3rd firefighter Mário Faustino. It all happened early in the morning of Wednesday, the 22nd, at 6:22 am, when an ambulance from the Lagos Volunteer Fire Department was called to transport a woman in labor to the hospital in Portimão.
But «the evolution of labor forced the operatives to carry it out along the way» and the baby ended up being born in the ambulance, with the help of the two firefighters and INEM.
The newborn and his mother were assessed on site, but they were both “in good health”, having been transported to the Portimão unit of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA).
