Architect Gomes da Costa honored with street name in Faro

The street is at the entrance to the city, at the intersection between Estrada Nacional 2 and Avenida 25 de Abril

Architect Manuel Gomes da Costa already names a street near the entrance to the city of Faro, at the intersection between the National Road 2 and Avenida 25 de Abril.

The toponymy of the new Rua Arquiteto Gomes da Costa was inaugurated last Friday, November 10th.

According to the Chamber of Faro, this is a street that will very soon gain a new centrality with the completion of the construction work on Avenida Aníbal Guerreiro (which, like Avenida 25 de Abril, is part of the 3rd Circular road project).

The street «thus allows us to pay homage to one of the most important and influential architects of his generation in Portugal, and in particular in the Algarve region and in Faro.

Born in 1921, in Vila Real de Santo António, Manuel Gomes da Costa entered the Architecture course at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts at the age of 20, but even before finishing his first year, he ended up moving to Porto, where he was student of Carlos Ramos and had among his colleagues the architect Fernando Távora.

It was in 1953 that the architect Manuel Gomes da Costa arrived in the Algarve, having immediately developed an architecture that broke with the standards of the time, deeply influencing many of the professionals – architects, engineers and others – who worked in the region, as well as the training of new generations of architects.

Over more than five decades, between 1950 and 2002, Manuel Gomes da Costa designed around 400 buildings in the Algarve region, mainly in the Eastern Algarve, in the cities of Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão and Faro.

«The urban landscape of the city of Faro, in particular, saw its image deeply marked by the architecture of Manuel Gomes da Costa, from the second half of the XNUMXth century, and a large part of his works are still current, presenting themselves to our eyes with the same “freshness” and beauty", says the municipality.

Over the past few years, the Municipality of Faro has been recognizing the work developed by Architect Gomes da Costa, through the support and promotion of various initiatives, such as the “Moderno ao Sul” exhibition; the recreation of modernist houses Faro for the Minecraft game environment by students from schools in the municipality, through the MI.MOMO project.FARO – Minecraft and Modernist Architecture in Faro or the classification of municipal interest of the “Axis of Connection between the Market and João de Deus Secondary School”, which defines strict rules for intervention in modern buildings.
