Praia do Canal Nature Resort, in Aljezur, nominated for the Mies van der Rohe architecture award

O Canal Nature Resort Beach, in Aljezur is one of 14 Portuguese projects among the 362 nominated for the Mies van der Rohe architecture prize, announced the organization of the most important European award in the sector.

Under the responsibility of the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, the award will now go to a selection of 40 projects, to be announced in January 2024, and the finalists, a month later, who will be visited by a jury composed of Frédéric Druot , who presides, Martin Braathen, Pippo Ciorra, Tinatin Gurgenidze, Adriana Krnáčová, Sala Makumbundu and Hrvoje Njiric.

Portugal is the sixth country with the most nominated projects, alongside Greece, after Spain, France, Germany, Belgium and Austria.

According to the list provided by the award, the nominated Portuguese projects are Caminho das Escadinhas, in Matosinhos, by Paulo Moreira, the new building of the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP), by Michele Cannatà, Fátima Fernandes and João Carreira, a house in Grândola, by Ricardo Bak Gordon, the General Silveira Building, in Porto, by Tiago Antero and Vítor Fernandes, the Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro, in Vila Nova de Gaia, by José Manuel Gigante and Manuel Fernando Santos.

Also in Porto, the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal, designed by Nuno Brandão Costa, and the Cinema Batalha, whose renovation project was led by Alexandre Alves Costa and Sérgio Fernandez with Atelier 15, are nominated, as well as the recovery of the Bolhão Market, signed by Nuno Valentim Lopes, Rita Machado Lima, Frederico Eça, Margarida Carvalho and Juliano Ribas.

Among those nominated are also João Branco and Paula del Río who signed the Piódão Square and Tourist Office, while in Aveiro the “Monochrome Apartment”, by João Carmo Simões and Daniela Sá, was nominated.

In Lisbon, the Houses in Andaluz, by Pedro Lagrifa de Oliveira, and a house in Santa Isabel, designed by Paulo Tormenta Pinto and Rosa Maria Bastos, are named.

The brothers Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus sign a house in Barreiro that is also named, and in Aljezur the house is named Canal Nature Resort Beach, designed by architect João Favila Menezes.

The Mies van der Rohe 2024 awards will recognize the best projects completed between April 2021 and May 2023, with this cycle seeking to “reflect on the challenges currently faced by citizens, architects, clients, contractors, political decision-makers and other professionals, in the context of European Green Deal”.

In February of next year, the organization will reveal the finalists for the award and, in April, the winners.
