Olhão creates nucleus to «protect children from poverty»

The municipality believes that the creation of the NLGPI in Olhão «will be an added value for the municipality»

The president of the Municipality of Olhão and the Local Social Action Council and the national coordinator of the Child Guarantee signed yesterday, October 9, a partnership protocol for the implementation and monitoring of the Local Child Guarantee Center (NLGPI) of Olhão, which aims to “protect children from poverty and risk”.

The municipality believes that the creation of the NLGPI of Olhão «will be an added value for the municipality, by constituting a structure especially dedicated to responding effectively to the vulnerabilities of children, young people and their respective
families, through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, simultaneously promoting cohesion and social development and enhancing effective social integration».

The protocol establishes specific competencies and actions to be developed by the NLGPI to prevent and combat poverty and social exclusion of children and young people, within the scope of the implementation of the Child Guarantee Action Plan 2022-2030.

The NLGPI is responsible, according to the Municipality, for carrying out social diagnosis, so that children have access to education and care in early childhood, to education and activities in a school context, to at least one healthy meal per school day, to healthcare and adequate housing.

The goal of the National Child Guarantee Coordination is that, by 2030, the 161 thousand Portuguese children living in poverty will have a normal childhood.

To begin developing effective work on the ground, the first meeting of the stakeholders of this NLGPI has already been scheduled for the beginning of November.
