Neptune Search presents safeguarding of Lagos' underwater archeology at international symposium

Symposium brought together 75 experts from around the world

The project “LAqua: Safeguarding and disseminating the underwater cultural heritage of the Municipality of Lagos”, promoted by Neptune Search – Association for Research and Defense of Nautical and Underwater Heritage (NS), was one of the projects selected to be presented internationally at the Symposium of Conservation for Underwater Archeology (ISCUA 2023).

The symposium was organized by the Institut Balear d'Estudis en Arqueologia Marítima (IBEAM), bringing together 75 experts from around the world between September 28th and October 1st, in Formentera (Spain).

The presentation of the project and preliminary data results from the execution of a Collaboration Protocol between NS and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC) / National Center for Nautical and Underwater Archeology (CNANS) and motivated the interest of the international scientific community, whether due to the importance and scope of the project, and the lack of support from local and regional public entities.

In the words of the president of NS, “the demonstration of love for the shirt in the face of a lack of support ended up guaranteeing the future collaboration of researchers from the most varied parts of the globe in the project, including Ian MacLeod, one of the greatest specialists in cultural heritage conservation underwater".

Still within this scope, the work planned for 2024 will already include the participation of researchers from Australia, Croatia and Spain, as well as the exchange of information regarding possible joint applications for EU support funds for the preservation of underwater cultural heritage.

The management of Neptune Search takes the opportunity to express its thanks to the scientific coordination team, as well as to the entities that have supported the discreet, but important research and monitoring activities: Port Authority of Lagos, Marina de Lagos, Sopromar, WeDive Lagos and Neotek.
