Lagoa will host the European Cross-Country Championship in 2025

Joint candidacy of the Municipality of Lagoa and the Portuguese Athletics Federation

Lagoa will host the 31st European Cross-Country Championship, in December 2025. The organizing country and municipality were announced yesterday, early in the morning, in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius.

After a long process, the candidacy formalized by the Municipality of Lagoa and the Portuguese Athletics Federation, and several visits to the municipality's territory, the choice of European Athletics fell on Portugal and, more specifically, on Lagoa, demonstrating total confidence in this candidacy.

In this way, Portugal will host the European Cross-Country Championship for the fourth time.

Lagoa is, once again, chosen to host a major sporting event, this time at European level, having been recognized for its ability to host and organize major events, as well as the conditions that the territory has for practicing sports and for hosting thousands of visitors, whether from delegations from the various participating countries, athletes' families, the media or those passionate about the sport.

The Municipality of Lagoa and the Portuguese Athletics Federation had presented their candidacy on December 9, 2022, in Turin, Italy, to European Athletics, to host the 31st edition of the European Cross-Country Championship, «there being a huge expectation that the event could come to Portugal and Lagoa».

«This will be a great opportunity for Lagoa to provide the municipality with infrastructures that allow the practice of the sport and infrastructures to support competitions, whether national or international», explains the Lagoa Chamber. «This is a process that is already underway and the work necessary to hold the European Cross-Country Championship will soon begin», he adds.

«It is a source of enormous satisfaction. We have long wanted to organize a race on the scale of these European Cross Country Championships. It will certainly be a great challenge, but Lagoa will rise to the occasion», assured Luís Encarnação, president of Lagoa City Council.
