João Ferreira is the new president of the CHUA Board of Directors

João António do Vale Ferreira is the new president of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), replacing Ana Varges Gomes, announced this Friday, October 20th, the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE- SNS). 

The new president will take office on November 1st, even before there is Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS) which will bring together CHUA and Regional Health Administration (ARS).

Ana Varges Gomes' departure was already expected, especially because the mandate had ended on December 31st of last year.

João António do Vale Ferreira has a degree in Economics from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, and has experience in hospital administration.

Administrator and president of the Executive Committee of the Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira (2019 to 2021), he was also administrator and president of the Executive Committee of the Hospital de Braga (2011 to 2019) and president of the board of directors of the Centro Hospitalar de Vila Nova de Gaia /Espinho, EPE (2006 to 2011).

In addition, he was a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of CUF – Sociedade Gestora de Participações Sociais, SGPS, SA (2022), was a non-executive member of the Vila Franca de Xira Hospital and CUF hospital units in the North Cluster, between 2012 and 2022.

Paulo Neves, who remains as a member, and Mariana Santos, who continues as head nurse, remain from the last Board of Directors.

The new clinical director is José Manuel Lourenço da Silva Almeida, director of the Multipurpose Emergency Service at Hospital de Faro since 2018, succeeding Horácio Guerreiro (Ana Varges Gomes had taken over provisionally these functions, after the dismissal of Horácio Guerreiro).

In a statement, the Executive Management of the SNS recognizes the "commitment of the team" that left office, thanking "the work of the members who leave office, renewing the commitment to consolidating the management of the National Health Service units and defending a public service health system that responds to the needs of the population”.

João António do Vale Ferreira He graduated in Economics from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto in 1989. He attended the Executive MBA in International Trade at the Instituto Empresarial Portuense of the Associação Industrial Portuense (between 1994 and 1995) and the Senior Management Course “La Gestion de la Complexidad ” from the Escola Superior d'Aministració e Direcció d'Empresa in Barcelona, ​​in 1995.

He attended the 18th PADIS – Senior Management Program for Health Institutions at AESE – Escola de Direção e Negócios, in Porto, in 2013 and the “Proteus Leadership Programme” at London Business School, in 2017.

Non-executive member of the Board of Directors of CUF – Sociedade Gestora de Participações Sociais, SGPS, SA (2022), he was a non-executive member of the Vila Franca de Xira Hospital and CUF hospital units in the North Cluster, between 2012 and 2022.

José Manuel Lourenço da Silva Almeida has been a Specialist in General Surgery since 1998 and Director of the Multipurpose Emergency Service of the Faro from the Algarve Hospital and University Center, since 2018.

Director of the Emergency Service/General Hospital of the Centro Hospitalar de Coimbra, Portugal, from 2001 to 2008.

Between 2009 and 2013 he assumed roles as Director of the Department of Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Urgency/Emergency, at the Coimbra Hospital Center and as Director of the Central Operating Theater of the CHUC General Hospital (2009-2012). Between 2010 and 2012 he was Coordinator Responsible for the Internal Medical Emergency Team of the aforementioned Hospital Center.

Member of the Technical Committee to Support the Requalification Process of the National Emergency Network/CTAPRU, in Portugal, within the scope of the Ministry of Health (2006-2008) and Member of the Emergency Requalification Monitoring Group – GARU – of the Ministry of Health ( 2007-2008). He was co-author of the Health Sector National Contingency Plan for the Influenza Pandemic (in the area of ​​Emergency Services), General Directorate of Health, Ministry of Health of Portugal (2007) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Society of Health Management Co-author of a Technological Platform dedicated to Social Networks for Promotion, Intervention and Education for Health.

Paulo Jorge dos Santos Neves He has a degree in Law and completed postgraduate courses in Urban Planning and Construction Law, Public Contract Law and Health and Medicine Law and Economics. Master's student in Management of Health Units.

He teaches the executive master program in Health Services Management, at ISCTE, in Lisbon and has been, since 2008, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in the Algarve.

Association leader of the Círculo Teixeira Gomes and the Ibn Qasî Association, Coordinator of the SEDES Association for Economic and Social Development, is a Trustee of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Faro. He is also a founding director of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Portugal and the Czech Republic.

He was administrator of the Private Hospitals of Portugal — HPP in the Algarve (Caixa Saúde Group) and Lusíadas Saúde. President of the Board of Directors of the Municipal Theater of Faro, EM having been elected Councilor in the Municipal Council of Faro (until 2017).

Elected president of the Algarve Tourism Region and, before that, deputy to the Assembly of the Republic. He was a member of the General Council of UAlg and the Advisory Council of the Escola Superior de Saúde. He was founder and president of the housing cooperative for young people, Habijoven Algarve and coordinator of ANJE — Algarve and vice-president of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs — Porto.

Mariana Augusta Mata Santos took the General Nursing Course at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Évora, in 1987, and the Course of Higher Studies Specialized in Nursing at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Beja, in 1998. Completed the Master's Degree in Human Resources Management at the Instituto Superior Dom Afonso III, in Loulé, in 2010.

Works as Nurse Director and Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, EPE since 2020 to date.

Nurse Manager of External Consultation/Special Exams from 2012 to 2020, she was Nurse Director and Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio, between 2005 and 2012. At the same hospital, she was Head Nurse of the Day Hospital and Consultation service Pediatrics Externship (2002 to 2005).

Mariana Santos was Regent of the Pediatric Nursing Curricular Unit of the Nursing Degree at Escola Superior de Saúde Jean Piaget do Algarve (2008 to 2011) and Author and co-author of several projects in the area of ​​health, aiming to improve accessibility and quality of care .
