The Passos Contados Route with the theme “Fossils and stones. Journey to a long time from the fossil deposit” will take place on Sunday, October 15th, with geologist Hélder Pereira as guide. The meeting point will be at 9:30 am in Cacela Velha.

The Cacela fossil deposit, of recognized scientific and heritage value, is located at the eastern end of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and is mainly exposed on the banks of the Cacela river.

There, sedimentary rocks around 10 million years old emerge, in which there is a great diversity of fossils, with special emphasis on the shells of bivalve molluscs and gastropods in an excellent state of conservation.

Interpreting the past in light of the present, thanks to the identification of fossils of several species typical of warm waters, it is known that at that time the Cacela region would have been bathed by much warmer waters than today, with temperatures similar to those found today. nowadays in tropical regions.

«Much more than a simple walk, join us and come and hear this story», challenges the Cacela Heritage Research and Information Center, located in the Former Santa Rita Primary School, which promotes the initiative.
