Lagoa and Portimão host 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games

Event brings together athletes from 26 National Olympic Committees from different sports

Lagoa and Portimão will host the 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games, after the joint candidacy of these two Municipal Councils was chosen, «by acclamation», at the General Assembly (AG) of the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games (ICJM), on Friday -fair.

Between the 11th and 18th of September 2027, athletes from the 26 National Olympic Committees that currently make up the ICJM, will head to Portimão, to compete in events such as Handball, Canoeing (sea), Football, Karate (kata), Fighting, Swimming (open water), Rowing (sprint), Tennis, Sailing (iQFoil and Formula Kite) and Volleyball.

The competition venues will be at Praias da Rocha and Alvor (Portimão) and Praia Grande de Ferragudo (Lagoa), «as well as in the estuary of the River Arade, which unites the two Municipalities», according to the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission , which went public to salute the two municipalities for having managed to bring this event to the Algarve.

At the CIJM GA, Portimão-Lagoa 2027's candidacy was presented by José Manuel Araújo, general secretary of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP), who highlighted as its main advantages "the very good beach areas" and the "good number of hotels» existing in this area of ​​the Algarve, allowing most journeys to be made on foot.

This is combined with the «tradition in organizing major international events», accessibility to the airport Faro, the “solid sports program” and the support of national sports federations.
