Fires: Government supports beekeepers in Aljezur, Monchique and Odemira with 25 thousand euros

Normative order that created this aid has already been published

The Government created extraordinary support, with an allocation of 25 thousand euros, aimed at beekeepers affected by the fires that occurred in May and August this year in the municipalities of Aljezur, Monchique and Odemira, it was announced today.

In a statement, the office of the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Maria do Céu Antunes, indicated that the normative order that provides for the creation of this aid, signed by the government official, was published today.

The support, he highlighted, will be “attributed to beekeepers whose apiaries were directly or indirectly affected by the fires that broke out, in the month of May and in the first days of August this year, in the municipalities of Aljezur, Monchique and Odemira”.

Referring to the damage caused by the fires, the guardianship pointed out that, in addition to cattle, sheep and goats that “were affected by the elimination of pastures used for their food”, bees were also affected.

The fires “also compromised the nutrition of bees on beekeeping farms whose apiaries are located close to the burned areas, depriving the bees of the natural food that these areas provided them”, he highlighted.

According to the ministry, beekeepers must make a request for support, within a maximum period of 30 working days after the date of publication of this order, with the territorially competent Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRAP) and Fisheries, accompanied by a damage declaration form and the declaration of stocks.

Approval of aid “depends on administrative verification and payment is preceded by on-site control of the losses suffered by DRAP”, he added.

On August 25th, the Minister of Agriculture and Food had already announced unitary support of 8400 euros for farmers and livestock producers in Odemira and 5400 euros for those in Aljezur.

The fire that occurred in August started on the 5th of this month, in the municipality of Odemira, having been given as dominated at 10:15 am on the 9th, six days after it broke out in an area of bush and pine forest in the Baiona area, in the parish of São Teotónio.

The fire entered the municipalities of Monchique and Aljezur and the burned area amounts to around 8400 hectares, within a perimeter of 50 kilometers.
