the fire that this afternoon it broke out in an area of woods and eucalyptus trees, on the south slope of Picota, in the Monchique mountains, it is being fought by thirteen air assets, 263 operational, supported by 75 vehicles.
The fire started in the Maia and Picota area, as he told the Sul Informação the mayor of Monchique, who is monitoring the work.
The flames are evolving from north to south, going down the slope to Fornalha. In between, there are several houses, "but, at the moment, none is at risk", added Paulo Alves.
According to the mayor, in any case «we are prepared to remove people, if necessary, in a joint action by the GNR, the City Council and the Parish Council.
«This was a very explosive fire, it started with a very great force, in no time it was already burning strongly», added president Paulo Alves, in his statements to the Sul Informação.
The alert for this fire, according to the Civil Protection website, was given at 14:51 pm, but shortly after 15:00 pm a thick column of smoke was already visible from a great distance.
Meanwhile, on the ground, resources continue to be reinforced, both operational and in vehicles.
Mayor Paulo Alves confirmed to our newspaper that the area where the fire is raging had already been destroyed in the great fire of 2018.
