Rents could rise 6,94% next year without a government brake

According to August inflation figures released today by INE

The value of rents could increase by 6,94% in 2024 if the Government does not establish, as it did this year, a limit on updates, according to August inflation figures released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to INE data, in the last 12 months up to August the average variation in the price index, excluding housing, was 6,94%, a value that serves as the basis for the coefficient used for the annual update of rents for the next year, under the New Urban Rental Regime (NRAU), which represents an additional 6,94 euros for every 100 euros of rent.

However, the actual update value of rents – applicable to both urban and rural areas – will only be determined on September 12, when INE releases the definitive data referring to the IPC for August 2023, after being published in the Diário of the Republic until 30 October.
