Mértola, with a maximum of 43,6 degrees centigrade, was this Sunday the hottest place in the whole country, according to data available on the website of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

In the top 10 of temperatures recorded yesterday, all locations are located in the Alentejo, with the exception of one: Martim Longo, in the Algarve municipality of Alcoutim, reached a maximum of 42,8ºC, making it the 8th hottest location in the country.

Among the ten areas with the highest temperatures are also Portel/Oriola (43,4ºC), Viana do Alentejo (43,3ºC), Alcácer do Sal7Barrosinha (43,2ºC), Mora (43,1ºC), Castro Verde/Neves Corvo (43,1ºC), Alvalade (42,9ºC), Martim Longo (42,8ºC), and also São Pedro do Corval/Reguengos de Monsaraz and Amareleja, both with a maximum of 42,7ºC.

Because of these weather conditions, the IPMA extended the red warning for today due to the heat to the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal, after having already been activated for Castelo Branco, Santarém, Évora and Portalegre.

The red warning, the most serious, is active from 04:30 am and at least until 23:00 pm today, according to the IPMA.

These notices will turn orange until the end of Tuesday in Évora, Santarém, Castelo Branco and Portalegre.

In the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal, the warning changes directly to yellow (the third most serious) from 23:00 today, remaining so at least until the end of Tuesday.

Braga and Beja are also under orange warning until the end of today, while in the districts of Viseu, Leiria and Coimbra the orange warning remains until the end of Tuesday, then changing to yellow.

In Bragança and Guarda, the orange warning remains active until 23:00 on Wednesday.

Of the 18 districts of mainland Portugal, Faro it is the only one that will not meet in the coming days under any type of notice, according to the IPMA.

As of Tuesday, the IPMA predicts a rotation of the wind towards the south quadrant, and, therefore, a gradual decrease in temperature values, which should initially occur in the southern region, extending to the rest of the territory on Wednesday it's Thursday.

For today, the IPMA predicts a slight rise in temperature in the North and Center, and the continuation of warm weather with clear skies. The wind will blow harder in the highlands.

As for temperatures, the minimum will vary between 14º Celsius (Bragança) and 28ºC (Portalegre) and the maximum between 29ºC (Faro and Sines) and 44ºC (Évora).
