Doctors who work in the Algarve, Alentejo and Azores regions will be on strike on the 30th and 31st of August, according to the regional strike notice released today by the Independent Doctors Union (SIM).

The document indicates “the total stoppage and absence from the workplace” of doctors who “work in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, in the area of the Regional Health Administration of the Alentejo and in the area of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve”.

The strike runs from 00:00 on the 30th of August until 24:00 on the 31st.

The doctors' struggle “aims at making the Government give an effective response to the union's demands list” and “also aims at the urgent closure of the activity” of the negotiating table constituted between the Government and the SIM.

The union structure demands “a proposal for a salary grid that restores the career of accumulated losses due to the inflationary erosion of the last decade and that positions the entire medical profession, including interns, with honor and justice in the single remuneration table of the civil service” .

Doctors' unions and the Government concluded a fifth extraordinary negotiating meeting in Lisbon on August 10, without reaching an agreement on the revision of the salary scale, the main item in the list of demands presented to the negotiating table, which began in 2022.

Leaving the meeting with the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro, the president of the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM), Joana Bordalo e Sá, and the secretary general of the Independent Doctors Union (SIM), Jorge Roque da Cunha, reiterated to Lusa your disappointment.

A new negotiating meeting between unions and the Government is scheduled for September 11th.

During August and September, SIM has scheduled strikes in other regions of the country.
