Registration for terrestrial and underwater cleaning in Albufeira is now open

“Let's Cleanse Land and Sea” is the motto for this initiative

Registration for the coastal clean-up action “Vamos Limpar Terra e Mar”, which will take place on September 16, is now open, announced the Albufeira Council.

This is an initiative of this municipality, in partnership with various entities in the municipality, such as the Albufeira Marina, Albufeira Fishermen's Association, Whaling Fishermen's Association, Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters, Easydivers, Dreamwave, Algarexperience, Docapesca, Maritime Delegation de Albufeira and AIMM – Association for Research in the Marine Environment.

“Let's Clean Up Land and Sea” is the motto for this initiative, which includes an underwater and land cleaning action, the latter taking place on land adjacent to Albufeira Marina.

Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president of the municipality and responsible for the areas of Environment and Sea Affairs, recalls that the first edition had the participation of 109 volunteers and resulted in the collection of more than two tons of garbage from the beach, the cliffs and the bottom from the sea.

The mayor draws attention to the fact that “every year 5 to 12 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, killing more than 1 million seabirds and more than 100 thousand turtles, seals and whales, in addition to a huge number of fish, which is why it is urgent to fight the contamination of the oceans”.

Cristiano Cabrita takes the opportunity to appeal to all citizens to join the initiative on the next 16th of September, with a meeting point scheduled for 9:00 am, at Marina de Albufeira. For this purpose, interested parties should register by clicking here.

Preserving and sustainably conserving the oceans, seas and marine resources is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. about 90 known species and provide half of the oxygen we breathe.
