Doctors' strike had average adherence «over 80%»

According to SIM, there were «large tens of thousands of consultations and hundreds of surgeries not performed»

The doctors' strike, which took place this Wednesday and Thursday, 30 and 31 August, in the Algarve, Alentejo and Azores, had an average participation "over 80%", reveals the Independent Doctors' Union (SIM).

According to SIM, there were "tens of thousands of consultations and hundreds of surgeries not performed".

The Union highlights, even so, the «high deontological sense and irreproachable behavior demonstrated in the fulfillment of the minimum services».

In this statement, SIM highlights how the situation in the Algarve and Alentejo is “worrying”, lacking “more than 300 specialists in General and Family Medicine to fulfill the objective of ensuring a family doctor for all”.

«The shortage of specialist hospital doctors makes it increasingly common to resort to service provision contracts to ensure hospital care in specialties, as diverse as Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, Surgery, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Imagiology and Gastroenterology», he says. also the union.

«It is not possible to demand more, with tens of thousands of extra hours that these doctors sacrifice so that the services do not collapse. More than 70% of emergency service schedules are provided by providers, and it is incomprehensible how the state spends more than 760 million euros on these services,” he adds.

SIM regrets, finally, that «it is through the media that it becomes known that the final proposal of the Government will be presented at the negotiating meeting, on 11 September, regarding the matters that have been under discussion: that of the revision of the legislative building of the USF and Full Dedication».

«The remaining points agreed in the negotiation protocol signed with the Ministry of Health 15 months ago were left out, namely the revision of the salary scale, the rules for the organization and discipline of medical work and the emergency teams. These points were the subject of formal, timely and structured proposals presented by SIM», he concludes.
