Government strengthens support for vocational education and resource centers for inclusion

The reinforcement was approved on Thursday at a meeting of the Council of Ministers

The Ministry of Education announced today an increase in financial support for vocational schools, allowing for an increase in the number of students, as well as resource centers for inclusion.

The reinforcement was approved on Thursday at a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

In the case of vocational education, expenditure on support arising from the conclusion of program contracts with private schools in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon and the Algarve regions was authorised, says the Ministry of Education in a statement.

In a global amount of 59 million, the expense corresponds to an increase of about 8%, including the replacement of 5% referring to cuts during the 'troika' period and an additional 3% increase which, according to the guardianship, will allow the increase of the number of students attending vocational education.

«The replacement of this cut responds to a demand from the schools that teach professional courses and their representatives and also consolidates the path taken since 2015 of valuing this teaching path, which constitutes a secondary education path that responds increasingly to the profiles of students and the qualification needs of young people and territories», says the Ministry.

As for the resource centers for inclusion, the Council of Ministers authorized expenditure amounting to around 13 million within the scope of cooperation contracts signed for the next school year.

The value, which has not been updated for several years, is now increased by around 25%. For the Ministry of Education, it is «another step in fulfilling the agreement with the social partners and, above all, a more robust response in supporting students with specific educational needs who will benefit from more therapeutic support».
