Tavira wants «the most attended edition ever» of the Mediterranean Diet Fair

Entrance is free

Crafts, gastronomy, producers, gastronomy and music, with Rui Veloso, Camané with Orquestra do Algarve, and Carolina Deslandes. The Mediterranean Diet Fair returns, from the 7th to the 10th of September, and Tavira wants this to be the «most attended edition ever».

The event, which is now in its 9th edition, was officially presented on the morning of this Wednesday, July 26th, at a press conference in the Main Hall of the Town Hall.

This year there is something special: the 10th anniversary of the approval of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO is being celebrated.

The Fair will have more than 200 stands, 7 musical stages and artists from six countries: Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Morocco and Algeria (in this case, a premiere).

In addition to the musical part, there will be exhibitors of handicrafts and traditional products, botanical and seed shows, catering, gastronomic demonstrations, exhibitions, guided tours and a seminar, on September 7, on “Innovation in the Mediterranean Diet”, at the Experimentation Center Agrária de Tavira.

This year, according to the mayor, there are no “big news”.

«We have grown and we are going to consolidate the model we have, always with the question of seeing what we can improve. There are aspects that are obviously transversal to the Mediterranean Diet and to which we also have to give particular importance, such as sustainability and the landscape», said Ana Paula Martins, to journalists.

The mayor also highlighted the fact that this is a fair made up of partners, such as the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development of the Algarve, the Regional Directorates for Culture and Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve, the Schools of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve and Vila Real de Santo António, the University of Algarve, the Tourism Region and the association In Loco.

«I think that we, in the Algarve, have this practice of working in partnership. I almost dare to say that the Mediterranean Diet Fair was one of the first major projects at a regional level that was done in partnership. Usually, after so many years, the partners stop getting along, but this was not the case», said Ana Paula Martins.

Thus, the event will feature traditional gastronomic demonstrations, with the Hospitality and Tourism Schools and In Loco, guided tours, with the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, or a workshop, on the 8th of September, at 11:00 am, on how to store food… no fridge.

The Fair will also feature the presence of various manifestations inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, such as Caretos de Podence, cavaquinho, drums, fado or the Alentejo song.

On the 10th of September, at 10:00 am, with departure and arrival at Praça da República, the Mediterranean Diet march and race will take place.

In the Cloisters of the Convent, three sessions of Mediterranean cinema are held: on Friday, the 8th, the film “O Azul do Caftã” (Le blue du caftan), by Maryam Touzani, on Saturday, the 9th, “Days in Flames” (Kurak Gunler), by Emin Alper, and finalizing, on Sunday, the 10th, the work “The Cairo Conspiracy” (Walad min al-janna), by Tarik Saleh.

As for the musical shows, they start on the 7th, in the space of the old fish market, next to Mercado da Ribeira, with the “Galandum Galundaina”, with the Pauliteiros de Miranda.

On the stage of the Castle, the “Ars Nova Napoli”, from Italy, in the Jardim do Coreto, the “Úlua”, from Spain”, and, in Praça da República, the Portuguese Rui Veloso.

On Friday, the 8th, the auction stage will host the fado singer Carla Pires and Daniel Pereira Cristo, instrumentalist of the cavaquinho. On Palco do Castelo, it will be the turn of “Barrut”, from France, and, in Jardim do Coreto, “Iskaria”, from Italy.

On the main stage – Praça da República – Estrella Morente, one of the main names in Spanish music, will perform.

For Saturday, there is a performance by “Diabo a Sete”, in the auction space, by “Duo Brotto Raibaud” (Spain), in Jardim do Coreto, by “Global Gnawa” (Morocco), in Castelo, and by Camané with Orquestra do Algarve, in Praça da República.

The Fair will end on Sunday, the 10th, with a day dedicated more to youth. The shows will be by Carolina Deslandes (Praça da República), Lemma, from Algeria (Castelo) and “Os Ganhões de Castro Verde” and Pedro Ribeiro with “O Cante não cai do Céu” (Lota).

For Ana Paula Martins, the wish is just one: that it be the «most attended edition ever» of this event.

«My expectation is that it exceeds all the last editions. We don't have tickets and it's always difficult to measure, but there will surely be thousands of people who will come to this, which is the biggest event in the municipality », he concluded.
