The Chamber of Faro wants to have concluded, by the end of this year, the elaboration of all the urban requalification projects planned for the riverside area, including that of the future outdoor recreational port, to have work on the ground as soon as possible, he revealed to the Sul Informação Rogerio Cod.

The wish of the President of the Chamber of Faro is to end this, his 3rd and last term, with as much work being carried out as possible in this area of the city. As for the inaugurations, he admits, a next mayor will do them.

After Docapesca has transferred to the Municipality the powers over the entire urban space of the riverside area, including the current dock and the entire river front between Largo de São Francisco and the Municipal Theatre, the Council will have an easier time moving forward with the projects it has for the waterfront.

And there are many – and ambitious – plans by the municipality for this noble area of the city.

«As for the projects we have for the area to the south of the railway line, the section between the Centro Ciência Viva and Largo de São Francisco has now been delivered to us. We are just checking all the pieces», revealed Rogério Bacalhau.

«We already have a part of the outer recreational harbor project completed. We hope to have the rest of the project completed this summer as well", he added.

In the case of this work, there is even a favorable Environmental Impact Statement (DIA). «It is something that already came from a previous project. The current one is a lighter project and, therefore, we are using this DIA to continue the recreational port».

Further behind schedule is the elaboration of the project for the renovation of the connection between the Theater and the dock, “because it depends on others. But it would always be the last phase of the requalification, since we should only do the intervention after the recreational port is finished, because it doesn't make sense to be reclassifying that and then trucks from the works are passing by there».

«We have now been given the project for Bairro Ribeirinho, which provides for the requalification of the entire area over Rua Conselheiro Bívar, Largo da Madalena and the adjacent streets. The planning of the work on the central axis, from the Station to São Francisco Square, is also in its final phase», summarized the mayor of Faro.

«We think that, this year, we will have all these projects completed, so that we can move on to the next phase, which is financing and execution», he revealed.

To carry out the interventions, the Farense municipality will apply for funds from the European Union, but, anticipates the Faro mayor, it will also be necessary «to resort to external financing to the municipality, since there are things like this that do not have lines of financing in the community funds ».

“That's the next step: once we have budgets and projects completed, look for funding and try to see if we can get European support. We are talking about a few million euros to carry out all this».

As for the deadline for the execution of the works, Rogério Bacalhau is not committed to definitive dates, only assuming that he will no longer be president of the Chamber when the bulk of the work is concluded.

«The works will certainly not be ready in 2026 [Rogério Bacalhau will not be able to run for re-election in the next municipal elections, having reached the term limit]. My objective is that they are ongoing, not least because they are very profound works and that have to be phased. For example: if the works on the central axis and the Bairro Ribeirinho happened at the same time, we had to pick up people and take them to another side », he illustrated.

What is certain is that these works «will take some time», so «they have to be done in a phased manner».

Even so, says Rogério Bacalhau, in two and a half years, when his last mandate ends, there will be, «certainly, works in progress and there may be completed phases, but the projects will not all be concluded at the end of the mandate. They will continue for the next term. The objective is to have the projects ready, because without them there is no work. Whoever comes next has projects to inaugurate and that is very good».
