Local housing strategy Faro was revised and foresees an investment of 80 million

The initial proposal, launched in 2018, provided for an investment of 25 million

A proposal to update the “Local Housing Strategy of the Municipality of Faro (ELHF) 2018-2030” (ELHF) was approved by the Municipal Assembly and foresees a direct investment close to 80 million euros, announced the municipality of Faro this Thursday, July 13.

The document points out that the Municipality intends to build more housing and purchase houses, as well as leasing, for subsequent subleasing, on an affordable income basis. The offer of housing at controlled costs is also part of this strategy, with the aim of supporting, as a priority, young individuals and families, allowing them to settle in the municipality.

From an initial proposal (from 2018), which provided for an estimated investment of 25 million, the current ELHF has evolved into a solution that provides for a direct investment of close to 80 million euros.

This amount is intended for the construction of 211 apartments under a supported income regime, the acquisition of 150 apartments, the lease (for subleasing) of 100 apartments, the Social Emergency Accommodation Center (CAES) and the shared apartments, which correspond to 60 vacancies, the construction of a Shelter House, by the Vítor Reis Morais Foundation (destined for victims of domestic violence), for 18 people, and cost-controlled housing for more than 800 dwellings.

«With the approval of this amendment, it will become easier to carry out a reformulation of the municipal housing policy, which will also have a "Municipal Housing Charter" (in preparation), thus helping resident families in the municipality, increasingly pressured by these expenses and guaranteeing the necessary social follow-up (done by the local authority services), which, together, will be key factors in reducing situations of segregation and increasing integration and cohesion», believes the Chamber in Faro.

Thus, presenting a diagnosis of current needs, the new Local Housing Strategy of Faro identifies means of financing that may be useful for this process.

In addition, the Municipality stresses that «housing problems can only be overcome through close coordination between the municipality, the Central State and local agents and that, given the dynamics of the sector and the unique conditions made available by the Recovery and Resilience, with regard to the amounts and financing conditions, which are particularly favourable, but which imply the presentation of results by 2026, there will have to be constant monitoring and evaluation and the revisions that are considered relevant».
