Flag "Praia Quality of Gold 2023" is hoisted in Senhora da Rocha

Quercus classified a total of 394 beaches with Gold Quality in Portugal (46 less than in 2022)

The ceremony of raising the flag “Quality of Gold 2023”, on the beach of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, in the municipality of Lagoa, is scheduled for this Tuesday, July 11, at 11:45 am.

Participating in the event are the presidents of the Municipality of Lagoa, of the Board of Directors of the company Águas do Algarve, and of the Regional Center of the Algarve of Quercus (Luís Encarnação, António Eusébio and Marta Monteiro, respectively), as well as Pedro Coelho, administrator of the Region Algarve Hydrographic Agency and the Portuguese Environment Agency.

Distinguished with the “Praia de Ouro 2023” flag, Nossa Senhora da Rocha beach is one of the six bathing areas in the municipality of Lagoa awarded this year by Quercus, confirming the excellent quality of its bathing waters.

The choice of this beach to host one of the official raising ceremonies of the “Praia de Ouro 2023” flag took into account the work carried out by the Municipality of Lagoa in the environmental area, as well as by Águas do Algarve (a company of the Águas de Portugal Group), entity responsible for the treatment of wastewater, essential to return to the marine environment the water with the necessary quality for the maintenance of ecosystems.

At the start of the 2023 bathing season, Quercus classified, based on official public information provided by the Portuguese Environment Agency, a total of 394 Golden Quality beaches in Portugal (46 less than in 2022), of which 328 are coastal beaches, 56 are river beaches and 10 are transitional beaches.

In the Algarve, 85 beaches were distinguished with this award: 21 beaches in Albufeira, 8 in the municipality of Aljezur, 3 in Castro Marim, 4 in Faro, 6 from Lagoa, 3 from Lagos, 10 from Loulé, 2 from Olhão, 3 from Portimão, 4 from Silves, 4 from Tavira, 12 from Vila do Bispo and 5 from Vila Real de Santo António.

The company Águas do Algarve (AdA), in a press release, underlines «the importance of the beaches in our region, which are distinguished by their high quality and sustainability. With a rich natural diversity and a committed approach to environmental preservation, the region's beaches are true gems that must be valued and protected».

The region «is blessed with an extensive coastline that is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Europe. These beaches are characterized by their crystalline waters, fine white sand, and breathtaking natural landscapes for all who visit them. In addition to their natural beauty, the beaches in the region are also notable for the excellence of their water quality and exceptional sustainability», he adds.

The AdA adds that «the quality of the water on the beaches is regularly monitored, ensuring that the strictest standards of safety and cleanliness are maintained».

In addition, the region «implemented effective water treatment measures under the responsibility of Águas do Algarve, and waste management systems to preserve the purity of the beaches and minimize environmental impacts, in the certainty that visitors can enjoy the transparent and clear waters peace of mind, knowing they are in a safe and healthy environment".

On the other hand, «sustainability is a fundamental principle in the management of the beaches in the region, with a continuous commitment from several entities, which together promote responsible practices that protect the coastal ecosystem and its biodiversity. Águas do Algarve has, over the years, and continuously, implemented environmental education initiatives to make the resident population and visitors aware of the importance of preserving the environment, nature and in general, and preserving the water resources of the region".

The AdA continues, “beaches are not just tourist destinations, but also valuable habitats for various marine species. The preservation of these natural environments is essential for the health of ecosystems and the ecological balance in general”.
