Traffic on Highway 2 (A2) has already been reopened in both directions, announced Brisa Autoestradas, after this afternoon, circulation was cut off at the Almodôvar junction, following the forest fire that broke out in the area.

“Brisa Autoestradas informs that traffic has reopened in both directions of the A2”, says the company in a note.

The alert for the fire that is raging in the rural parish of Santa Clara-a-Nova and Gomes Aires – Monte dos Medronhais, in the municipality of Almodôvar, district of Beja, was given at 12:02.

According to the Civil Protection page, by 16:30 pm, 240 operational personnel were fighting the flames, supported by 73 vehicles and 12 air assets.

A source from the Lower Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command told Lusa that the fire had three active fronts at 14:30 pm.

“Accesses and strong winds favorable to the fire are the main problems faced by operators on the ground”, added the same source.

Meanwhile, in statements to RTP3, Commander José Ricardo Horta, from the Baixo Alentejo Sub-regional Command, said that a water discharge hit a firefighter, who was transported to Beja Hospital to be assisted.

According to the commander, until 16:30 there was no housing at risk, nor did anyone need to be removed or assisted.

José Ricardo Horta admitted that strong winds could enhance the evolution of the fire and said that the type of terrain where the fire is raging makes it impossible to use terrestrial means.
