SNS wants centers for medical certificates across the country by the end of 2024

This is «an innovative service for users»

The National Health Service (SNS) wants to create Medical and Psychological Assessment Centers (CAMP) across the country by the end of 2024, said today the executive director in Matosinhos, site of a pilot project that is already issuing certificates.

«It is an innovative service for users. The objective is that, when someone needs to renew their driving license, hunting license, nautical sports license, use and possession of a weapon, in short, those medical statements that are necessary, instead of making an appointment with the doctor family, easily schedules this evaluation in this place», explained Fernando Araújo to journalists at the end of a visit to the CAMP of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of Matosinhos, in the district of Porto.

The Matosinhos center is part of a pilot project in which ULS Alto Minho is also involved, whose CAMP was also visited today by Fernando Araújo, in Viana do Castelo.

«We really want, during this year and the next, as the Local Health Units (ULS) are being created, to replicate this model. Here will be two good cases of evaluation, of use, and they will be two cases of success, I have no doubts», said the executive director of the SNS, adding that the objective is to have these services throughout the country by the end of next year.

According to Fernando Araújo, the CAMP has two advantages: «the first is that it frees the family doctor for acute illness, for patients who really need to be seen, removing this more administrative and bureaucratic area from the family doctor».

«On the other hand [the user] ends up having a very easy, very simple service here, being able to even register on the user portal, and thus having the answer to his problems, in this case the certificate to be able to renew the license, very calmly”, he added.

Fernando Araújo also pointed out that friction is reduced in the «relationship of trust between doctor and user», which is sometimes «shaken when the doctor thinks that the user could not drive» due to age or other medical problems and thus this relationship « no longer has a negative impact», he pointed out.

«It is a different service that makes this assessment and, in a calm way, decides whether or not the user can, for medical reasons, drive the vehicles», explained the person in charge.

According to Fernando Araújo, in Matosinhos «bookings opened last week, and there are already more than 60 bookings made, people easily adhere to this concept».
