The PSP and the GNR signed "an unprecedented protocol", which provides that personnel from one of the police forces can act in the area of competence of the other, due to the number of tourists expected in the summer, especially for the World Youth Day.
According to Lusa, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), «the unprecedented protocol of operational cooperation», signed last week, will enter into force on Thursday and will last until 15 September within the scope of the operation «Verão Seguro ” of the Ministry of Internal Administration, which provides for the use of proximity and visibility policing valences by the GNR and the PSP, namely in the scope of patrolling on horseback and patrolling by bicycle.
The MAI refers that the GNR, which essentially carries out policing in rural areas, and the PSP, which operates in urban centres, carry out their duties in their respective areas of territorial responsibility, but it is expected that this summer «will continue to be characterized by a high flow of tourists", in addition to the "very significant number of young people and pilgrims from all over the world, in a dimension never seen before in Portugal, on the occasion of the World Youth Day in Lisbon".
In this sense, emphasizes the MAI, the protocol between the PSP and the GNR aims to «contribute to a better and greater security of citizens, increasing the levels of effectiveness and efficiency of its activity, with the best use of State resources in matters of security public safety, as foreseen in the Integrated Urban Security Strategy (EISU)», which will soon be approved by the Council of Ministers.
According to the protocol, the human and material resources of the reinforced police are under the operational direction of the territorially competent force that is reinforced and act in the area for which they were requested.
"In cases where there is an incident whose location, nature, characteristics and resolution justifies the action and articulation of both security forces, the request for reinforcement is made through its command and control centers", decided the Government.
The “Verão Seguro” program, which takes place annually in the Algarve, will be extended this year to Lisbon, Porto and beaches with greater tourist pressure due to the increase in tourists and the World Youth Day, which takes place in the capital in the first week of August.
