Infralobo fights for a more sustainable future with new biowaste collection project

Project will cover more than 3 thousand families

Infralobo launches a pilot project for the collection of biowaste that will cover more than 3 thousand families.

The new project will allow residents to separate their organic waste at home, free of charge, as part of the company's strategy to promote greater environmental sustainability, anticipating an even greener future for future generations.

«The separation and selective collection of bio-waste is an essential tool to reduce the amount of waste destined for landfills and incineration, transforming them into renewable resources, so it is important that citizens get involved in this project», explains Infralobo, reinforcing that the «separation of biowaste in the habits of families, as already happens with the recycling of other waste».

In the first week of collection at restaurants located in Infralobo's intervention area, which served to test the system, a total of four tons of biowaste were collected, which suggests the success of this operation.

In terms of residents, Infralobo's objective is to extend the project to more than 2.500 homes in two phases: the first in July, with the delivery of 375 composting kits and the arrival of the first street containers, and the second in October, when around 2.200 resort owners will be covered, it is expected that more than 3.000 families will be involved in this pilot project.

The kit contains its own bag and a small 7-liter container to store the biowaste, which is then deposited in the new brown containers installed at the resort or collected door-to-door. The domestic container has a chip to automatically open the street container, so that the biowaste is then sent to a composting centre.

Bio-waste, or organic waste, is what remains from preparing meals and food leftovers, such as fruit and vegetable peelings, eggs, coffee and bread grounds, among others, making up, on average, almost 37% of the bin garbage from most households.

This waste, which also includes green waste from gardens, can be transformed into manure or natural fertilizer through composting.

In a note, Infralobo states that the collective containers where residents can then place their biowaste will be placed in Zone 9, Quadradinhos, Aldeamentos, Praça de Vale do Lobo, Avenida das Acácias, Ténis, Rua das Orquídeas, Pingo Doce, Avenida do Garrão, Mimosas, Quinta Jacintina and Ferrarias.

According to the CEO of Infralobo Carlos Manso, this is a very important project for the resort, not only due to the reduction of the negative impacts that waste production has on the planet, but also because it contributes to greater environmental awareness and awareness of food waste. .

«Knowing that close to half of the waste produced by families can be regenerated and applied, whether in agriculture or for energy use, makes us believe that we can effectively improve our environmental behavior, as a community, in an extremely simple way» , pointed.

«On the other hand, when we start to carry out a selective separation, we are more aware of what we are putting in that container, which can generate an awareness effect for the reduction of food waste», continues Carlos Manso.

Among the advantages of composting is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, by avoiding the decomposition of organic waste in sanitary landfills, and the reduction of dependence on chemical fertilizers for the soil and plants, since the compost can be used as fertilizer, which avoids the use of harmful substances to the environment and health.

To obtain the bio-waste kit, residents should contact Infralobo by telephone on 289 096 583 or, alternatively, send an email to [email protected].
