Company guarantees that trail between Airport and Quinta do Lago «will remain open»

Starburst Investments, owner of Herdade do Ludo, says it only intends to increase security on site

The company that owns Herdade do Ludo, Starburst Investments, ensures that the section of the Ecovia Litoral that crosses this property «will remain open to the public, without restrictions, for cyclists, pedestrians and organized groups».

In a clarification sent to the Sul Informação, the company added that, “taking into account the potential risks for the large hundreds of people who cross that site every day, and which increase substantially in the summer period, Starburst Investments decided to reinforce security. Among other measures, the use of motor vehicles in areas difficult for people to pass was conditioned».

The note was sent following the controversy caused by the placement of mesh fencing at the accesses to the trail that connects the access road to Praia de Faro, on the airport curve, to Quinta do Lago – and which also gives access to Mata do Ludo and to very popular places for birdwatching -, however already withdrawn by the authorities.

Now, the company has gone public to assure that it is not its intention to prohibit the passage of people and cyclists, but rather "to avoid accidents with people and limit the maximum environmental damage in a protected area".

"It is necessary, in particular, to reduce the risk of repeating incidents such as the great fire that, in June 2022, partially destroyed that space and a vast forest area in the Ria Formosa", he said.

The company, which this month saw a vineyard installation project embargoed by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, for lack of proper authorisation, also points out that «Herdade do Ludo is an exceptional private area where nature, traditional economy, such as salt flats, agriculture, landscape and natural heritage».

«Starburts Investments will not give up on protecting the environment and people's safety, nor will it give up on keeping intact vernacular economic activities and of great value for the Algarve», he concludes.
