Highlight of the Philosophy Spring Festival

The lecture by Paulo Borges, from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, on Agostinho da Silva, addressed to the “young philosophers” of the 10th year of the Secondary School Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in Portimão, «is certainly one of the highlights of Philosophy Spring Festival», guarantees the organization of the event, promoted in that educational establishment.

The lecture is scheduled for tomorrow, May 10th, at 11 am, in the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão, with available seats almost sold out.

«It will be another “B-side” moment, as young people will discover the fascinating thought of a Portuguese philosopher who is not part of school programs, but inhabits the hearts of many Portuguese people, including, probably, many of the parents of the students who they will remember him because of the much-missed television program “Conversas Vadias”», explains Carlos Café, the philosophy professor responsible for the event.

But the Philosophy festival, promoted by the Clube dos Filósofos Vivos and by the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School Grouping, also includes a cinema cycle dedicated to António-Pedro de Vasconcelos, which started today, the 9th, always at 10 am, at the Algarcine Cinemas de Portimão, with free entrance.

On the 11th and 12th, the presentation of the films «Os Gatos Não Tem Vertigens» and «Km 224» will be attended by the director.

Telectu at Clube União Portimonense

The program already included music with Vítor Rua and his project Telectu (last weekend), but there will also be moments of poetry, theatre, philosophy for children, literature, philosophical coffee, flamenco and an artistic residency for young people.

Paulo Borges, tomorrow's speaker, is a professor at the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon and a researcher at the Center for Philosophy at the same University, where he coordinates the Vita Contemplativa Permanent Seminar.

He is also professor of Medicine and Meditation at the Faculty of Medicine of the same University, as well as former president of the Agostinho da Silva Association and coordinator of the Agostinho da Silva Academy.

He is the author of hundreds of articles and other texts in scientific journals and collective works, published in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Croatia, Romania, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA, Brazil, Colombia, Timor and Macau.

Author and organizer of 65 books of philosophical essays, aphorisms, poetry, fiction and theater, published in Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and Brazil.

Doctor Honoris Causa by the Tibiscus University of Timisoara (Romania), in 2017. Ibn Arabi Prize – Taryumán 2019, awarded by the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society Latina, in 2019.

As an “appetizer” for the lecture, Carlos Café suggests a short text by Professor Agostinho da Silva, highlighting the following sentence: “Man was made to be a poet on the loose”.

“Each person must be total, complete, and free to be so. I always hit on the point, for me very important, of total, unconditional freedom: each one being what he is, something quite restricted by the political and economic apparatus. Man was made to be a poet on the loose, whatever his poetic expression. It could be music, literature or nothing at all... Looking at the cats, the stones, the trees. It can even happen that a person who is absolutely nothing suddenly has a stupendous idea for the good of the world”.
